Choosing the Right Surgeon
When considering cosmetic surgery, choosing the right surgeon can be the most important
decision that you make. The popularity of plastic surgery is soaring and more and
more physicians are trying to meet the demand for this specialty that has become
an integral part of mainstream medicine. Any licensed physician can call himself
or herself a cosmetic surgeon, so the importance of finding a properly trained and
certified surgeon is paramount. Choosing a surgeon who is a member of The American
Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the first step in ensuring quality care and
outcomes. Founded in 1931, the ASPS is the largest plastic surgery organization
in the world. ASPS Member Surgeons are certified by The American Board of Plastic
Surgery, which is the only medical board dedicated to plastic surgery of the face
and the entire body. Each ASPS Member Surgeon:
- has at least five years of surgical training and at least two years of plastic surgery
training performed in accredited training programs
- is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery which implies completion
of formal plastic surgery training, at least two years of practice and the successful
completion of a comprehensive written and oral examination
- is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast,
body, face and reconstruction
- is peer-reviewed for safety and ethical standards prior to attaining the honor of
active membership
- only operates in nationally accredited facilities
- maintains hospital privileges to perform various procedures

The Consultation
Once you have chosen an ASPS Member Surgeon for a consultation, what can you expect?
During the consultation, you should meet face-to-face with the surgeon and discuss
you needs and desires. You should not feel hurried or rushed during this discussion.
At
North Scottsdale Plastic Surgery, we typically schedule a one hour initial consultation
with Dr. Williams so that you have plenty of time to express your desires and to
have all your questions answered. Also, this is an important time for Dr. Williams
to get to know you better so that he can customize the operation to fit your specific
needs and lifestyle. It is very important to us that you feel comfortable in our
office, with our staff and with Dr. Williams. We will review your health history
and make sure that you are healthy enough to undergo an operative procedure. We
will work hand in hand with your primary care doctor or specialist to make sure
that you will have a successful surgical outcome. Dr. Williams will then perform
a thorough examination and recommend the appropriate operation without pressuring
you to consider unneeded or additional procedures. He will make clear the risks
of surgery and possible outcomes and answer all your questions. When you are comfortable
that you have received all of the information regarding the procedure you are interested
in, and all of your questions are answered, you will meet with Jane, the Office
Manager. She will discuss the costs, payment policies and will help you schedule
the procedure. Once you have scheduled the procedure, we will arrange for a second
appointment, or pre-op visit. During this visit, Dr. Williams will go into more
detail regarding the events that will occur the day of surgery, the follow-up appointments
and what to expect during your recovery. Prior to your surgery, we make sure that
you are fully informed and prepared for your procedure. We will ensure that you
surgical experience is safe and successful!
